Akira is more commonly a male name, true, but it *can* be a female name. For example, 渡瀬晶, Watase Akira (Family names come first in Japan, as I am sure you are aware), a most lovely Japanese actress. (Hint, if you google her, make certain that safe search is very, very on, as most of her images are most certainly NOT safe.)
