I think this DOES illustrate Ian pretty well. He's trying to do good, but willing to do bad to accomplish it. He's good at improvising but doesn't think through the consequences (once the priest wakes up and goes to the police about being mugged, every LEO and priest is going to be on the alert knowing there's a violent criminal about and be on the lookout for a tall person wearing a cloak. That won't be a problem if he gets in and out fast, but if he runs into unexpected problems (coughMejicough) it might be disastrous). And he constantly has to justify himself... to himself...
