Electionocution 2007 - Battle Of The Admin Superstars

Post by Viking-Sensei »

Well, following the guidelines laid out by Impy and Poe, I'm here to announce that it's time to select the remaining slots for the Admin Council. Technically, these elections were supposed to take place today, but since things have been a little crazy between the Convention this weekend and Halloween, I'm unofficially officially moving them to next Wednesday. I'll try to cover the issues as best and impartially as I can (I'm secure until 2008, so I really don't care which way these go... tee hee.) and show the basic 'ballot' at the very bottom with the issues spelled out as they will appear when the polls open on Wednesday. The polls will appear Tuesday night at Midnight and will be closed Wednesday night (again at Midnight) and will be done in an impartial and confidential manner that I haven't decided upon yet. I'll get back to you Sunday/Mondayish for how the voting will take place.

Issue 1:

Now, since this board is technically new, we have some additional issues to vote on this time... As spelled out in the charter here, there are meant to be three admins for the 'Admin Council'... one directly elected by the good peoples of the board and two appointees by The Powers that Be Poe and Impy. I was appointed already, as "they needed someone they could hunt down and harm" to be in charge during the transition, and my appointment is valid through 2008 at which time my slot will be open for appointment just like everyone else's.

Starting now, we're taking nominations for Admin council. Reply back to this post and clearly state "I nominate _______ for the Admin Council." You can nominate yourself or someone else, but please keep the nominations down to two maximum per person. If you nominate someone else, we will require that person to accept that nomination before they are put on the ballot. Nominations will close Tuesday at Midnight when the official voting starts.

That leaves one direct election appointee chosen by you of the boardlands and one nominee to be decided by Impy and Poe. I don't think they'll pluck someone randomly from the ether and say "You, you're an admin now, mwahahahaha!", so their appointee will probably be someone who is also up for 'election' but doesn't get the votes.

Issue 2:

As I alluded to earlier, there is a different issue not originally addressed in the charter... since this board is still relatively new, we don't have a lot...going on... just yet. I mean, you've all been wonderful participating in the games, showing off your art in the images folder, working with me on restoring the EN wiki, and providing the CAS team with a bunch of useful suggestions. So far, however, aside from the occasional 'Viking Fusion!' or 'Viking Hammer!' (Merge or Edit/Delete) there's been a relatively low call for moderator action. I suspect that it's mostly due to the fact that those of us from the Kyhm era have gotten good at self-administrating, and I'm certainly not complaining, however it does call into question whether or not at this time we really *need* all three Admins.

So, instead of having too many chefs and not enough soup, I'm going to propse a temporary reduction of the number of Admins to 2 (me + the direct elect admin), with Impy and Poe being able to enact their executive privlage and appoint Admin 3 at any time they see fit. If the board would suddenly pick up, come under attack, fall apart, or otherwise go crazy, they'd still be able to invoke their right to pick a third, but for the time being we'd acknowledge that we really only need two.

Issue 3:

I'm also suggesting (as a seperate Issue) that we temporarily put the position of "Category Moderator" on hold pending warrantable need for the position. The charter lists that they can be directly elected OR appointed by the Admin Council, so what we're really voting on is whether or not you want to elect someone now or trust the Admin Council to appoint someone of their choosing if the need arises. If we vote to pick Category Mods now, we'll hold another round of nominations/elections in a month or so, however I suspect this will be more of a "Who wants to do this? Ok, you're it. Any objections?" situation.

Issue 4:

Ties. There currently isn't a provision on what to do during a 'Tie' vote in the charter. Therefore, I'm going to throw it to you... if there would be a Tie, we need to pick an official tie-breaker to ammend the charter with. The nominees are a) Poe and Impy, b) The Admin Council, and c) General Recount for two highest-voted options. This person/group would hold no extra votes than normal in any situation except for those which result in a direct stalemate tie within the amount of time allowed for voting.

(Of course, if you tie on the issue deciding what to do in the case of a tie, I'll kill you all. You don't wanna die, I don't wanna tie.)

So here's the Ballot Issues as they will appear on Tuesday night:

Issue 1) Direct Elect of Admin Council Member
Choose from amongst your ranks a new member for the Admin Council. Candidates for this are chosen from the willing nominations accumulated between Midnight EDT 1/1 and Midnight EDT 1/7 when official voting begins.

This person will gain all rights, privlages, and responsibilties that come with the title of "Admin" for the period of 1 year or until their resignation. They will work with the other member(s) of the Admin Council to promote good board health and organization, to establish and enforce rules where applicable, and to set a positive role model for other posters. This position directly answers to Impy and Poe, and is accountable to the other member(s) of the Admin Council.

Issue 2) Third Admin Status
This issue revolves around the status of the Third Admin, listed in the original charter as a direct apointee by Impy and Poe. The proposed amendment to current policy would suspend the selection of a third admin until Poe, Impy, The Admin Council, or the boards in general feel that we require a third.
(Against) I feel that we need all three members of the Admin Council. Impy and Poe should immediately choose a third member.
(For) I feel that we are fine with only two members of the Admin Council. Impy and Poe can choose a third member when and if they feel it is needed.

Issue 3) Category Moderator
At this time, according to the charter, we should also be either electing or nominating Category Moderators. The proposed amendment to current policy would suspend the selection of Category Moderators until Poe, Impy, The Admin Council, or the boards in general feel that we would require one.
(Against) I feel that we need to select Category Moderators at this time.
(For) I feel that we are fine without Category Moderators at this time. If it should become obvious that we need one/all of them, they can be selected at that time.

Issue 4) Tie Vote Ammendment
This is to decide who will cast the official Errant Story Forum "Tie Breaker" vote in case of a tie. This power will only be enacted in the event of a tie during an official voting session.
(Poe and Impy) I vote to give the right honorable founders the power to break ties on official board votes.
(Admin Council) I vote to give the noble and just Admin Council the power to break ties on official board votes.
(Recount) I vote that, in the event of a tie, the two or more options that tied go into a special "recount" mode where they are re-voted-upon by everyone in the hope of breaking the deadlock.

Issue 1) I nominate Boss out of Town for Admin. I also nominate Greybeard.
Issue 2) Vote cast for keeping Admins to 2 until a third is needed.
Issue 3) Vote cast for not bothering with Category Moderators for now.
Issue 4) Vote cast for Poe and Impy decision to decide a tie, because in all honesty it is their board.

I've been told (to my surprise) that I should swing by and say whether I accept or decline this nomination. I'll accept and will serve if selected, but have zero intention of "running for office." If BooT is picked, fine with me.

I'll post my own votes/nominations-if-any later today.

I think I will decline the nomination, for now, but reserve the right to be drafted if I gain world-wide admiration for my work as an activist, write several well-reviewed best-selling books, and win an academy award and a Nobel peace prize, all in my spare time. But even then, only if Sally Quinn, Maureen Dowd, and David Broder agree that I don't have cooties anymore.

:x Dammitall, I've got to stop flipping over here directly from the political blogs. Now I've disqualified myself.

My only complaint about the administrators is that we don't have enough smilies. My favorite, the wryly ambiguous :s, is not represented.

C'mon, guys and girls... even *fake* democracies can usually at front at least two viable candidates. The nomination portion shuts down tuesday night at Midnight UTC-5, so if you want to throw your own hat in the ring (or someone elses) now's the time. After all, "Bad shit is what happens when good people do nothing."

About 90 minutes remain before we cut off the nomination period and open up the poll.

As it stands, Graybeard runs uncontested for the votable Admin position. If anyone else wants to be a candidate, you need to declare NOW.

[Edit] The pre-voting phase is now closed. Please swing by the polling station here and cast your official vote. You have 24 hours.

Half an hour left in the Elections... so far we've only had 5 voters (I think... with the open-ended structure, it's possible we've had more). If you want your voice to be heard, now is the time.

Is it possible that many of us didn't even know about this? Yes, definitely.
