Friday Night Fu

Because it only took Viking-Sensei three years (and the approaching end of Errant Story) to come up with a better name for "General Discussions"

Friday Night Fu

Post by Imp-Chan »

Since Jim didn't post about it, I will.

Once upon a time, I was a scary unmedicated 19 year old playing pool in my friend Jim's basement. I no longer recall who was winning, but I do remember it was a Christmas/New Year's party, and that we had done our usual Christmas/New Year's schtick, involving some incredibly bad holiday movies, copious amounts of color commentary, and quite possibly also alcohol which of course I didn't have any of at all being underaged. Of course.

Anyways, we were discussing bad movies and pool cues and at some point the conversation turned, naturally enough, to Kung Fu movies. It was then, on this apparently memorable evening, that Jim told me all about a wonderous television show which, he said, he missed a lot. It was like MST3K, he said, except it was devoted to horrible Kung Fu movies. You know... the kind that epitomized the crappy martial arts movie, complete with bad dubbing or subbing, wacky plot holes, and contrived stunts. The sort of martial arts movies that were made on a shoestring budget, imported on half a shoestring budget, and played on late night television or sold on crappy vhs with worn paper boxes in the backs of the cut-rate video stores, shelved right next to the curtain that hid the porn. The kind that is obviously a completely and totally different genre from the modern, visually stunning martial arts film (pronounced phil-um, of course).

Jim spoke of this show dedicated to these arcane and culturally relevant wonders of the twentieth century (it was called Friday Night Fu) at some length, and waxed eloquent (as he frequently does... you get used to it) about its many virtues. He also bemoaned its tragically premature cancellation, and wished he could find copies of it somewhere, or that, better yet, it would someday come back. I listened, somewhat bemused I confess, and evidently I also remembered the majority of what he said. Apparently, this notion of a show dedicated to crappy kung fu movies made an impression.

Well... now his wish has been granted, and I'm finally getting to watch this thing too. I figure I should share the, erm... newfound bounty... and I can't think of a better group to share it with! Here's their first comeback episode.

^-^'

Edit: If only I could remember who won the pool games half so well. Their website.
Because scary little devil girls have to stick together.

Ah, yes, thanks. I was getting around to it, honest.

And the reason we jumped from pool to kung fu is because of one of the few episodes of Friday Night Fu I managed to retain from their original run... a movie called 'Equals Against Devils' wherein... well... here's the review from Yahoo Movies:
A man is permanently paralyzed in a near-fatal attack by a band of vicious hoodlums. After the incident, the victim finds he cannot progress with his life. Tormented by images of the violence he suffered, he repeatedly re-lives the tragedy before realizing that revenge is the only thing that will put his mind at rest. He obsessively mulls over how to appropriately punish those who have destroyed his life. He enlists the help of a stunningly able-bodied friend to help him carry out his master pay back plan. Incredible fight sequences and a dark, psychological tale set this film apart from typical kick and chop flicks. Great martial arts entertainer Roc Tien wrote, directed, and stars in EQUALS AGAINST DEVILS.
What it completely fails to mention, and what makes the movie entirely worth watching and then subsequently hating yourself for watching... it that the entire thing is set against a backdrop of competative martial arts trick shot billiards (almost the same premise as the soon-to-be-released Balls of Fury) that defy the laws of physics, usually with balls flying off the table and hitting objects far away, then bouncing back and landing perfectly.

So... if my comment about the Fu was sparked by Hil and I playing pool, and the thing it reminded me of was a movie where pool balls fly around the room... who do YOU think won the game?
How could a plan this awesome possibly fail?

The painter who charged by-the-blowout-patch to fix the walls?
