Re: Martial Arts, anyone?
Sorry about the threadomancy but had to put something in here.
Currently Im studing Krav Maga, an Isreali martial arts that is very good for real life situations (also tends to ignore the noble idea of not hitting below the belt).
BTW: First post here so greetings to one and all

Query, to all the experts: is the lack of groin kicks in most martial arts systems related to "not hitting below the belt," or is it more the difficulty of both hitting a remote area (near the body's center of maneuver) and doing so without unmasking something more vital (head and neck) when stooping to aim at that area.Lazoth wrote:Sorry about the threadomancy but had to put something in here.

Groins may or may not stop someone, I've seen people take repeated kicks to the groin and just shrug it off. It's a wasted kick when you think of the alternatives, if you can hit someone in the groin you can hit them in the knee. Knees are guaranteed to drop a man if kicked with any real force.

its not just kicks but also knees and strikes. Whatever it takes to break various holds and keep poeple that mean you harm away

I vaguely recall that the discipline I trained in when I was much much younger had a few crotch-based attacks as one of the ... I don't remember 100%, but I believe it was Shōrin-ryū.
Of course, my current style (Drunken Master Vikingjitsu) relies heavily on blows to the groin.

Those among us who are married men request that you use the term "battleaxe" with discretion.Boss Out of Town wrote:With a battle axe? Technically, my weapon of choice is a hammer. Still... valid point.

I can't claim to be an expert, but my guess is that most fighting systems one hears about are "martial sports" rather than "martial arts". The difference is that a sport has rules, which are designed to avoid serious injuries of the participants and to make the fights entertaining to watch for the spectators.Boss Out of Town wrote:Query, to all the experts: is the lack of groin kicks in most martial arts systems related to "not hitting below the belt," or is it more the difficulty of both hitting a remote area (near the body's center of maneuver) and doing so without unmasking something more vital (head and neck) when stooping to aim at that area.
In Ving Chun, all the main targets are in the center line of the body: groin, solar plexus, face, gorge. We don't stoop to attack the groin, everything below the waist is attacked with the foot or knee. The kick to the groin is done horizontally with the straight leg, the attack with the longest reach that we have. If the opponent is closer, we obviously prefer to attack the groin with the knee.
cheers,
