Return to Port Lorrel

As we play, occasionally we'll close a thread and open a new one to keep the size of threads (and relative complexity) down to a dull roar. Here's where we store the closed posts from the history of Errant Road.

Got shot in the drit! Painful!

Udo was outraged - his own beloved kobold, in the prime of her kittenhood, shot in the drit! Had she ever known the embrace of man? Would she ever again? He'd find her a koboldvoratrelundarfelioveteragynecologist-healer, or whatever it took, if it was the last thing he did. And he would avenge her drit! (Ah, but then, she'd shown she could heal herself and him too...so all her bits were intact for sure...and especially that silky fur on the back of her head...so soft, so pettable...)

"You monster!" he shouted. "You foul fiend, you...despoiler of drits! No drit's safe 'til you're under the dirt!"

"Whaa...?" said Winslow. "You've been reading Uruk McCarthy?" No sod's safe 'til you're under the sod. - it had been a graffiti fad, a few years back.

"You know it too?" said Udo. "It's a classic! That's where Pomikiru really started to take off!"

"Classic?" rejoined Winslow. "Classic rip-off, more like! Clearly derivative of Tsuimu Daifu! Just pulled from an early episode of Typhon the Antelope before he got all philosophical..."

"Got all boring you mean!"

"I guess some illustrated thaumo-fiction is meant for adults. Longer attention spans and all. The rest of you can go on reading Fluffy Voles..."

"Hey, there's an adult version of that!"

"Fluffy Voles Ride on Poles?" - he spoke with exaggerated derision - "Adolescent! Pure adolescent!"

The hate was rising in here, that was for sure. If it came to blows, Udo was likley to get the worst of it - Winslow had his magic barrier up, and Udo had nothing with more punch than a club. His staff was still behind the bar. If it came down to staying coherent, well, Winslow might not last much longer. But what would the stranger in the doorway say? And what would the girls do? Okay, well, obviously that, but which chaos?

"Umm Oooh-doh? Jay-me?" Tamina said, now flushed by the blood that had rushed to her head. "Bad man got a barrier up." She added, somewhat redundantly given the magic-users own declaration. "Stops the bullets and stuff." She continued, finally dropping back to the ground level with a flip. She landed in a swaying motion, mostly from the alcohol, and picked up a mug with a sly smile on her face.

"Hey! Mister bad man! Can you block this?" Without giving the wizard a chance to answer the kobold threw the recepticule and channeled her own magic into a charge. The object struck the barrier squarely and bounced off, as Tamina had so cunningly planned, unfortunately the aim of her body had been slightly off, and the tackling motion she'd meant to use to get to the wizard and knock him off his feet instead took her right past her target and out through the back door into the street.

There was a faint crashing noise, followed by a groan.

Tamina's plan had more than one unintended effect. Winslow turned his head to watch her go past. The bartender, on impulse, grabbed up Udo's staff and threw it to him. He'd already seen the writing on the wall - this fellow was washed up and was not going to bring good business this way anymore. In fact, it was about time he settled his bill and got going. Or else died immediately from some victim's well-deserved revenge, leaving the goods in his room to be forfeited under the Damage by Violent Tenants Who Get Killed Before They Settle Up clause.

So, anyway, Winslow turned back and fired off some kind of minor magic bolt at Udo, only to see it parried and absorbed by the Big Man Frontier Blaster. Udo, warm with anger, fired a gout of sorcerous goo, which splashed and scattered on the barrier, not harming anyone. "Outside!" yelled the bartender. "None of that in here!" He pointed to the stranger in the front doorway. "Make some room for these two to get out of here!" Or, you know, kill them yourself, either way.

As the crowed moved to make way, Jamie couldn't help but notice a small sheaf of stained papers on the floor that hadn't been there before the brawl. A "take stuff" instinct caused her to scoop them up.

As the combatants took their fight outside, they might have taken note of the smashed up snack-stall, the distraught woman who (until ten seconds ago) had operated the business, and the furry tail sticking limply out of the pile of wood it had been reduced to.

Stuffing the papers into a convenient pocket, Jamie walked out and helped Tamina out of the pile of wood that had been a cart. Checking to make sure that Tamina was mostly unharmed (if a little dazed, perhaps) she then casually turned around and shot Winslow in the back.

"Uuuuullllaaaeeugghh!!!!" said Winslow, as he whumped to the floor in front of the stranger. Several angry patrons looked back Jamie's way, upset with her decision to fire through the crowded room. They decided against rushing her, however. Her ability to fire at them again was plain for all to see. And that would be even more upsetting.

Udo was shocked at first, but quickly recovered his composure. He began to make his way back to his companions. A look of concern crossed his face and he began to pat his left breast. Now he was really worried, and scanning the floor as if for something he'd dropped. Only slowly did he make it back to the girls, but when he did, he swallowed hard, stood up straight, and looked to see if Tamina was all right. Which, as she was outside in the dark by the unlit back entrance, he couldn't see.

Jamie smiled.

"That peaceable enough for you?" she asked, looking at the stranger who had walked in. "Or do I need to be even more peaceable before we talk?"

The kobold shook herself in a shower of splinters and staggered sideways, forcing Jamie to grab her arm to stop her from falling again.

"I'm okay." She managed. "Might need a sit- ow!- down though." Her brain finally caught up to her eyes at this point. "Erm... what's occurring?"

Udo stepped over to the kobold's voice, relieved, and eager to lay a comforting hand on her silky fur. "He's dead," he said. "And there's a stranger wants to hire someone. Jamie or the dead guy, I'm not sure which."
