Goriel and beyond

As we play, occasionally we'll close a thread and open a new one to keep the size of threads (and relative complexity) down to a dull roar. Here's where we store the closed posts from the history of Errant Road.

[OOC: So where did everyone go? To keep things moving, and complete an introduction:]

Sister Rose nodded her appreciation of this young man's information. "Thank you. That's very helpful. But one thing: what, exactly, is a 'kept woman' in Goriel? That sounds kind of bad, doesn't it?"

"It do," the young man agreed. "But it be not as bad as it be soundin'. It be meanin' any woman who be under the protection-like o' the head o' the clan, for whatever reason, not just the ones you be thinkin' of -- I be thinkin' of, 'scuse me, ma'am." He blushed at the recognition of the thought that he'd just implied to be inside the head of this mighty officer-nun, never mind that that thought was exactly what Rose, and pretty much anyone else listening to the conversation, had been thinking.

Rose smiled again, but this time it wasn't just reassurance, it also had that playful element to it that those traveling with her had come to recognize. "Not to worry. We need to understand things as they are. You've been incredibly helpful, my son. Now just one thing more: could you possibly fetch us a small quantity, maybe a pound at the most, of this ship's ballast?"

The airman blinked at the apparent non sequitur. "Huh?"

The playful part of the smile took over. "Well, it sounds like we're going to be needing some of these bracelets, aren't we? Which means we'll have to make them somehow. And we have a great master of inorganic manipulation in our midst." A nod and wink at Argus, and she reached out and squeezed his hand. "Surely you can use some of the ballast to make bracelets for your women, can't you? I call dibs on the one with the 'wife' stone..."

------------

"How can I ever thank you?" the young woman asked the red-haired woman breathlessly, as they arrived at the top of the pass; the unborn burden she was carrying had made the ascent more tiring than it might have been.

The red-haired woman took stock silently before replying, just to make sure the girl would be all right. Satisfied, she took the girl's hands, feeling just a momentary thrill, just as she always did when performing a rescue. Her skills at moving in Goriel as though she were a man had made her more valuable to the Sisterhood as a scout than as a rescuer, and she didn't get to do this part of the operation very often. However, the Sisterhood was wise enough to recognize that all of its members had to experience the thrill of not just ferreting out a life to be saved, but actually saving one from time to time ... which was how she had drawn this assignment. (That, and the fact that she preferred working, and being, alone.)

"By living your life in freedom," she answered. "By raising your child to believe that we women are worthy human beings who can make the world a better place, without relying on a man to do it for us, or needing a man's permission to be all that we can be." The girl gaped as though this concept was completely alien to her, as the red-haired woman continued, "Now go. You have a long journey to make, to a house where there will be others who will help you, will take you the rest of the way to a new home. This will take you there." She cleared the brush away from where something had been concealed at the top of the pass.

The girl gaped. It was a cart of some kind, apparently, but what a cart! It only had two wheels, and a platform just big enough for one to stand on, with a rod projecting upward from its front edge, bearing a handlebar. [OOC: Really, I've felt for a long time that the Segway must have been invented by the dwarves, wouldn't you agree? ;) /OOC:] "But -- I don't know how to drive this."

The red-haired woman smiled, a momentary bit of merriment in eyes that didn't show that emotion very often. "You don't need to. It'll drive itself. Just stand on the platform and it'll do the rest." She didn't add that it was a dwarven artifact; this poor girl had already had enough shocks for one day.

The girl's eyes were beginning to fill with possibilities. A brief, experimental test ride later, she was ready to go. However, one thing needed doing first. "T-thank you," she repeated. "I am forever in your debt. But may I know the name of the woman who saved my life this way?"

The woman briefly considered her answer. It was decidedly irregular for the Sisterhood to use their real names when on a rescue mission, what with security and all. These weren't the usual circumstances, though. She decided she could risk a correct answer.

"Thérèse. Thérèse de Refuge-Nouveau. Now go, and may the blessings of the Five Great Mothers go with you."

Argus coughed. "Uh, well, I suppose, that is..."

Harker piped up. "I've already got a design ready for you, boss! And, if needed, I can whip up some appropriate clothing, too!"

Argus stared. "...What kind of clothing- don't answer that." Another cough. "Well. I suppose I'd better get to work, then."

Back on a different airship, Angrist found himself with a little free time. He'd never flown before, but he had an excellent head for high places. He'd found his way to the airship's propulsion and had meditated while balancing on it for some time. He checked the angle of the sun. {Just enough time for it} One by one, Angrist removed the amulets from his neck except for the largest. A quick shimmer and the place where he had been standing was empty. A slight pause and he was back again. {About what I thought}. He put his amulets back on and hid them under his shirt. {I have got to see a mage about my weights and my inhibitors}. Angrist started back toward the main deck {I wonder if that...Tamina might know enough to help with this.} He frowned. {She probably doesn't know anything besides healing, but I should check...It's a pain when my cage bends.}

[OOC: I tried to write this so it'd work regardless of whether the ship is actually flying or not]

Angrist's experiments aboard the Bonny Read were doubtless more useful than anything his fellow passengers were doing. The captain had been determined to get work out of them, but two of them were reunited lovers, two were more interested in inspecting the ship's weaponry than anything else, and all three of them took getting used to. And the few hours' flight probably wasn't enough time to get used to those three. (Unless the airship got attacked, in which case their real worth would become apparent.)

* * *

On the Veracian airship, on his way to the ballast, the young airman passed Tim. Tim was still staring out the porthole, sometimes brooding, sometimes thinking, sometimes not. They passed a few words before each continued what he was doing before. While Tim wouldn't interrupt his countryman's task, he meant to talk to him before the trip was through, and so learn what he could about where they were going.

[OOC: Haven't gone anywhere, but there's nothing significant for Tim or Udo to do until there's something for them to react to. Which is fine by me; I'm glad to keep reading these good posts and following the plot 'til then.]

Oh, good. I'd been worried I'd be stuck making the bracelets. My mother is way better at crafts than I am - probably since she's better than me at almost everything, having had centuries to practice. Healing is only area where I am more skilled than she. The idea of forging bracelets upon which might depend my life... yeah, I'm much happier leaving that up to a 'great master'.

"Surely you can use some of the ballast to make bracelets for your women, can't you? I call dibs on the one with the 'wife' stone..."

"Make mine with a green stone," I say to Argus. Kept woman sounds better than servant.

I turn to Harker and add "If you need help with the clothes, I'm not terrible with a thread and needle." I'm not good either - again, my mother's skill exceeds my own - but my life isn't going to depend on my clothes. And it will be the most use I've been in ages. I'm just not suited to tracking criminals - yet another area where my mother is far more skilled than I.

I wish my mother was on this trip instead of me.

Although, hey... new jewelry and new fancy clothes. Gotta look on the bright side, right?

Eli had surreptitiously sidled up to the Priestess while she was discussing jewelry with Argus' familiar. The half-elf coughed to get her attention.

"Desiree?" He said gently. "Do you have a minute to talk? Somewhere private?"

"Desiree?" He said gently. "Do you have a minute to talk? Somewhere private?"

I manage not to jump. I wish he wouldn't be so quiet when he moves.

"I... yes, all right," I reply.

I turn briefly back to Harker and say "I'll check on you guys in a minute to see if you need any help with the sewing." Then, turning away, I let Eli escort me somewhere private.

I'm not looking forward to this conversation, but... best we get it over with. And anyway, he seems to be in a... good mood. Not angry anyway. Sad. I wish I could make him less sad, but... I don't think I can.

"Okay," I say once we're away from everyone, "You wanted to talk?"

Sister Rose watched the arts and crafts making ;) with some satisfaction. They'd be at least somewhat prepared for hitting the ground in the excessively patriarchal city, she thought. She could adjust her own outfit with her shape-shifting skills, but the others would need to go native smoothly and quickly.

As for the bracelets ... I probably shouldn't have teased Argus like that, she thought. Before last night it would have been interpreted just as another playful thing. But now ... well, I'm not sure what to think. I don't want him to think I'm pushing him into marriage. Do I? I don't think so. Probably. Maybe.

That thought was getting uncomfortable, so as Eli and Desiree went off for their quiet talk, she set off on a conversational mission of her own. Argus and Harker and Brad and Lillith were all hard at work, and Desiree, at least, would be soon enough. But there was one person missing ...

She found Tim. "Is everything all right?" she asked, not having any concrete reason to believe things were not all right ... but the young man had grown curiously quiet, and more worrisome, detached.

------------

"Wait!" Therese called to the young woman as she prepared to depart on her odd gadget. "There is one thing I forgot. Hold out your hand." Puzzled, the girl complied.

"This will just take a second," Therese said, then she frowned and focused magic to her fingertips. A tiny beam of magic shot out to the bracelet the young woman had been wearing, made a clean incision to allow it to drop away, all without so much as a singed hair on her arm. There shouldn't be any singeing; Therese had done this often enough to do it with a jeweler's precision.

"You won't need this any more," she said in response to the startled look she got. "You aren't property now. Remember that." I, on the other hand, do have a use for it ... "Now go, and once again, may the Five Great Mothers bless you and speed you on your way." A quick hug, and the two women went in opposite directions, one to a new life with her unborn child, the other back on the road to the city she hated.

-----------

OOC: Nothing special going on with the other airship, at least until the group in the Veracian ship is farther along. I'd say go ahead and have whatever character interactions look like fun, assuming that it's somewhere in the air over southern Farrel (and possibly, given the apparent skill of the navigator, lost...).

"You wanted to talk?"

Eli held Desiree's gaze for what felt like a long time before dropping his eyes and staring at the floor.

"I scared you." He said simply. "I see that. I could have left those men alone, I could have left them to the 'justice' system of the port, but I didn't, I burned them alive. And you've barely said two words to me since. Have I...?" He stopped, swallowing the question he wanted to ask. "They were bad people Desiree. They'd probably bribed the authorities to look the other way... and I put a stop to them. And it wasn't wrong. Can you see that?"

Involuntarily, Tim sucked a little air through his teeth. He wanted and dreaded to talk. But this was too soon - it was Desiree he most wanted and dreaded to talk to, to know what he'd done, and what they'd done, during the time he couldn't remember. Everything all right? - damn her for that - all right indeed! Was it a jolly solider's prank for you? Or just a lark for the others that you let happen? But he needed to talk and not think, or his silence would come out the wrong way.

He kept his tone very humble. But if she'd been using her empathy spell, she'd know he wasn't feeling it. "I, ah, don't know if it is or not, ma'am," he said. "Do we know anything more abouuuut...what we'll face?" He couldn't help the stammer but it was part of his usual talk anyway.

He wasn't going to talk about Eli, or his doubts or his plans regarding this comrade-at-arms. Not just now. He needed to learn more to try to save him, and "snitching" - that would start things the wrong way. They'd stood shoulder to shoulder and that might count for something.
