Return to the Southern Continent

Re: Return to the Southern Continent

The Narwahl passed into clear skies and made steady progress as the day wore on. The kobold's knight protector had been taken below deck and placed in a hammock to recover from his recent exertions, leaving Tamina with little to do but scan the horizon for sight of the Southern Continent and borrow a harpoon or two for target practice on the silvery shapes of fish darting below the surface of the great ocean.

A few hours later, the humanoid had taken a break from sea hunting to pay a visit to the other members of her group, and stumbled upon the sick Khoo, she saw the young man incapitated and recalled a memory of the last person she'd seen in such a state. She mewled, partially in sympathy at the man's condition, partially in sorrow at Jaime's absense, and made her way over to him.

"I can help." She said. "Killikah magic's good for sickness. S'all about making people better, after all."

She put her hands on Khoo and muttered an incantation Leli had taught her to take away the man's nausea, feeling more confident than the last time she'd used the spell. A yellow glow emitted from the mage's hands and surrounded Khoo's head and stomach.

"Feel better?" She asked, once it was done. "Want some fish?" She added.

"Thank you," said Khoo. Really, there didn't seem to be much else to say.

[OOC: So forward to landfall?]

I love boats. Mmm....

Hmm? Udo is doing some fool thing. And... now he's all wet. Well, at least that's over. Tamina heals him - nice to know she has that skill set - and he passes out. Righto. I'll just... enjoy the sea air some more.

The waiter is sick. Ugh, he's harshing my buzz. Well, not really a buzz, but... by Anilis it almost seems like it. Being back on the ocean feels so good.

Oh good, Tamina made him stop. I walk over and give her a hug. "Thanks for that," I tell her, "He was ruining the smell."

OOC: I had no honest clue what to do about that battle challenge thing. Glad to see Udo managed on his own.

OOC2: Oh, and sure thing (on that landfall question).

[OOC: Well, technically, it was Khoo's sprite and Mr. Sauvage's steering that got Udo out of that one - but I'm sure he prefers the idea that he did it on his own...As far as landfall goes, it's Jack's adventure and up to him. Further adventures on the high seas, on land, wherever the adventure is, I'm for it! 'course I am also for sub-adventures written in by anyone else...]

OOC I'm alright for fast-forwarding, I've got a couple of things ready for the Southern Continent./OOC

They made good time, perhaps it was the possibility of further magic fog and crazed half-elves that motivated The Captain and his able crew to arrive slightly ahead of schedule. In any case, it was near midnight on the following day when the lights of Grendell finally appeared on the horizon.

Truthfully, it wasn't much of a town to look at; a motley collection of well-maintained, but basic wooden huts, a few larger buildings that marked a tavern, a few trading posts and an inn. Lamps on poles, campfires and illuminations through the circular windows of the buildings lit up the small port well. To the new arrivals, the settlement looked as if it had undergone some recent hardship, the signs were in scorch-marks on paintwork, boarded windows and smashed up gangways.

"Ralkin attacked here few weeks ago." Tamina explained, beaming at her approaching homeland despite the bad memory. "Looks like they're fixing it up though."

The ship drew to a halt a few minutes later. The kobold let out a whoop and jumped over the side to the wooden planking below.

Udo rattled down the gangplank once it was down, carrying a pack with his extra gear. He was quite recovered from his earlier ordeal, and his memory had already made a triumph of it. Midnight in strange cities could be fun!

He heard Tamina speak. "Well, if they try it again, we'll get 'em!" Really, these Ralkin didn't stand a chance. His opponents always went down! Sometimes he did it so fast, he didn't even know how he'd done it...

"M' village s' bout an hour that way." The kobold told Drusia and Khoo as they joined her and Udo on the dock. The humanoid pointed to a natural path to the jungle a few hundred yards beyond the edge of the settlement. She turned back to see blank looks on the faces of her comrades as though they couldn't see what she was indicating.

"<Oh.>" She said, the penny finally dropping. "<Night-time... right>. Umm... we should be k to go up now as long as they're no night-time sheeka... umm... carny-vores on the way."

No sooner had Tamina finished talking when an ear-splitting cry scame from the direction of the wilds. It was an alien sound to the ears of the visitors, something best described as 'eeeEEEEEEEEYYYYAAAAAIIIIIIIiiiiihhhh'. The kobold winced, as if in resignation.

"What was that?" Udo asked.

"Erm... a morraran."

"What's a morraran?"

"A night-time carny-vore." She said.

Khoo's eyes got wide at the scream from the jungle as he remembered a moment from his youth. He'd been out on the fishing boat with his father, when a combination of rough weather (and waves) and damage to its steam engine had forced them to seek shelter overnight on an unfamiliar, uninhabited island. Something had screamed like that as he was trying to get to sleep, and his father's assurances that it was just the call of a particularly noisy seabird weren't enough to keep him from being awake much of the night. And then, the next morning after the weather had cleared, there'd been a pair of large, clawed footprints on the beach... which his father pretended not to notice, but Khoo couldn't help seeing that the older man had gone pale when he saw them.

"Ah, might we be well advised to stay in town for the rest of the night?" he asked mildly.

Udo was struggling to get the jingly "shinies" off the chest of his robe as fast as he could. They were great for after-midnight encounters in bars; they weren't so good for hunting carnivores in the dark. While he privately agreed with Khoo's idea, he wasn't going to act scared in front of the ladies.

Tamina nodded at Khoo's suggestion; moraran were animals that even kobolds opted to hunt during the day, when the big lizards were less aggressive. She thought of describing the creatures to her friends on their way to the waterfront tavern but dismissed the idea, talk of monsters was ill-advised after dark.

The Tavern was quiet, the humanoid was unsurprised. They entered the building flanked by crooked shutters and gouge marks on the walls, the people inside looked a little worse for wear too. It was in the tired faces, the sorrowful expressions and the lack of conversation. There were ten or so patrons still drinking at that late hour and a solitary barmaid on duty. The kobold led the way to the bar, offering a smile to the young woman, who gave a strained one in return.

"You're from the Kobold village?"

"Been away, just going back." The humanoid replied, looking around sympathically. "You got rooms? Too late for walking through the jungle."

She nodded, drawing drinks for the travellers as they placed their orders.

"Business has been... slow, you might say."

"Since the plague, yeah. Have the Killikah been to visit?"

She shrugged. "Once. Your Elder turned up with an escort a few days after the attack to see if anyone was still sick."

Tamina nodded, that sounded like Leli, the old kobold looked upon Grendell as a foster child she had to mind. It had actually been the elder's suggestion to make more of an effort to establish a friendly relationship with the nearby village, as opposed to their previous neutrality.

"Were the peoples all ok?"

"Yes. We haven't seen hide nor hair of the plague or the Ralkin since then."

The kobold smiled despite the atmosphere, and turned her pointy-tooth grin towards the group. "That's good news. Was worried I was coming back to another cat-ass-trophy." She paused, furrowing her brow. "Dunno why someone would make a trophy from cat-ass... see why it's bad though."

OOC Feel free to add details about the barmaid or the customers, or throw in random visitors, etc./OOC
