The Rules

Post by Imp-Chan »

Greetings Everyone!

The internet is definitely a wonderful place for the free exchange of ideas. However, this is our particular favorite hang out here on the internet, and we are responsible for it. We want it to be a fun place for everyone, but we have to have a few rules to keep the peace, and also to keep this place focused and a reasonable representation of Poe's professionalism and our community's general awesomeness. Because of this, we reserve the right to make any rules we feel are necessary, and to enforce any bans or penalties as we see fit. Our sincere hope, of course, is that we'll never need to enforce any bans or other penalties at all.

That said, these are the rules. By joining this board, you agree to comply with all of them, always.

1) Be respectful of the community and its members. Remember, everyone is here to have a good time, and we'd like to keep the community as calm and drama-free as possible. Just so we're sure everyone is on the same page, the following are examples of how to be respectful:

- No flaming. Starting a fight just wastes everyone's time, and can ruin some people's day (like mine). If someone has broken a rule, use the Report button, and trust the board's moderators to take care of it. If someone needs to be pointed towards the rules or some obvious bit of reference material, do it, but do it privately and politely and then leave it at that.

- No pulling rank. It's important to understand that different members of this community have been fans for different periods of time, just as different members have different areas of interest that they've been exploring at different levels. That doesn't mean it's ever okay to belittle the newbies... all it does is make them feel bad. This is your fandom, too, so be welcoming.

- No initiations. This is a community which is open to anyone who follows the rules, and no one deserves to be harassed just because they haven't got the hang of posting here yet.

- No name calling, brazen insults, or general asshattery (unless specifically allowed by moderators of certain threads). There are plenty of other places on the internet where such behavior is tolerated. This forum isn't one of them.

2) Be respectful of any authors/artists whose fan communities have a home here. These are people sacrificing a great deal to bring you the work you love, and they deserve to be treated with respect. Again, we like to be clear around here, so these are ways to be respectful towards our neighborhood artists:

- Do not hotlink images, or direct link images. ANY images. Ever. This is a waste of the content-owner's bandwidth, and is also terribly rude (and, typically, a violation of their copyright). If you must link to or reference an image, link to the website page where it appears.

- Do not insult the creators. You're allowed to not like someone's work or career decisions, and you're allowed to say so. You're not allowed to be rude about how you do it.

- Do not harass the creators. Of course you should ask us questions, that's part of the fun, but don't invade our personal space too much. Everyone involved in CAS is a person just like you, and we all have places we'd rather not go and parts of ourselves or our lives we'd rather not discuss. We'd respect your privacy, so please respect ours.

3) Be respectful of the moderators. These are volunteers who have generously agreed to help maintain a well-run community here. Their job is to enforce the rules, but more than that it's to nurture the sense of community that we're trying to develop on these boards. That's a tough job, and it requires a lot of difficult judgement calls. Don't make their job harder by questioning their every choice. Here are some ways you can help keep the boards running smoothly:

- Make threads that have a point. The comics around here like to have a single thread per update to make past discussions easier to navigate. Don't post extra threads without reading a particular forum's guidelines about it first.

- Do not start introductory threads. There's no need to announce your presence when you enter a room in the real world, and there's also no need to do it here. Just jump in and start posting, and people will say hi or not in their own good time.

- Do not pad your post count. We don't care how much you've had to say, we care WHAT you've had to say.

- Do not spam, or self-promote excessively. You can always buy advertising, and using the boards to self-promote is kinda like telling all your friends how great you are... you might notice they quickly stop being your friends if you keep it up.

- Use the report button. Most of the moderators are very busy, and while they'll scan every active thread they probably won't read every post. You can help keep the board running smoothly by bringing problems to their attention with the report button so that they can take care of it more quickly.

4) This board must be work safe. CAS wants this community to be open to everyone, and that means that people need to be able to browse at work or at school, or with their kids in the room.

- Do not post porn, do not post links to porn, do not use pornographic avatars or signatures. If you want to link to a site that has such things, that's fine, just make sure the link is clearly labelled and that nothing non-worksafe is displayed on the actual page you link.

- Do not use or directly link noisy or animated anythings. If you want to link a website that contains such things, that's fine so long as it doesn't occur on the first page, and you provide a warning with the link.

- If for some reason you are posting an image, please keep it smallish. No one likes to have an image take up their whole window, and bigger images just make the forums take longer to load.

- Never post Tubgirl, Goatse, or anything of that ilk, ever, in any form whatsoever. Doing so is grounds for an automatic one month ban, or longer if it sufficiently annoys the powers that be. Impy doesn't like gross stuff, isn't amused by it, and does not want it even remotely related to her boards.

- You ARE allowed to swear. Like a fucking sailor. Go for it. Just don't swear AT people, because remember that we like to be respectful around here.

So, that's it for rules right now. If we need to adjust them later, we'll cross that bridge when we get there.

And now... welcome to the forums!

Good, solid rules -- an important part of any forum. I like that you've been very specific. It's a big change from the forum home of Errant Story's forums.

Question: Exploitation Now was never particularly 'work safe' in any sense of the word.

If that or a similar comic of Poes' ever comes back, will we have subforums marked 'NSFW', that we can actually discuss, post images of the comic, etc?

Possibly. We'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

I sort of agree with his thought process...like I stated in another thread, I sort of feel like a sewer rat coming out of the dungeons and walking into Central Park West. This seems so clean and sanitary. I understand why the rules are what they are and not arguing but this is gonna take a while to get used to. Just bear with me.

I'm sorry to note that we've just had our first posting of spam, somebody selling something or other having nothing to do with the story or the store. I deleted it from one board and will follow suit on the other where it appears (or would have if Impy hadn't beat me to it), but would someone care to formulate some language on how to deal with the spammer? "Don't do it" is obvious enough, what I'm looking for is a consensus on how long to let it go on before putting the spammer on probation or blocking him/her/it.

In cases where the spammer is clearly just a confused poster, and they're posting in an appropriate thread rather than hitting multiple places on the board, then give them some leeway until it becomes clear they need a bit of a time out to reconsider how they interact with our community.

In cases like this one, where it was a straightaway posting on multiple boards with no effort at all to understand or join the community first? I say permaban their asses. They can always petition for forgiveness if they care.

I am undecided on whether or not we should delete the threads and all the posts in them, or whether we should just Admin-edit them to get rid of the advertisement and let members clutter them up with the making-fun. The latter was the tradition on the old board, but I don't know that it really adds anything. I don't have a preference myself, so I'm inclined to let the populace decide. Or, you know, the new Admin Council.

Wow, this whole delegating thing is AWESOME!

"Permaban their asses" sounds like pretty simple and comprehensible language to me. :D Any dissent?

As Impy has pointed out, it is tradition to mock and ridicule those foolish few who've chosen this to be their final battleground... to that end, I have created "Purgatory", a single forum to funnel all actual legitimate spam and likewise into.

Unlike the rest of the forums, this has the auto-prune feature active, which means that after 7 days of inactivity the thread will be deleted. Unfortunately, my itchy trigger finger has already taken care of the previously existing spam, however with the holidays upon us, I have no doubt there'll be more.
How could a plan this awesome possibly fail?

Does saying this violate any policies?

"A line is crossed when the author goes from making legitimate criticisms of overreactions to treating smear campaigns and lies (and in cases even admitting to furthering an urban legend) about feminists and "social justice warriors" as if they were true. He's even invoking Godwin's Law. He turned Naga into a strawman Anita Sarkeesian and now it seems like he's just trying to be offensive to anyone who suggests that social issues are still important. He then makes it so only those with accounts can comment. Does he need somewhere where his ideas won't be criticized and he can insult others but not be responded to? Because it's hypocritical for this to be a place where there's no criticism while he mocks others who set up safe spaces elsewhere."

I prefer knowing the rules in advance, and it didn't seem clear if this was allowed. I'm not insulting the creator, all I've said is addressing what he wrote, no personal attacks or privacy violations.
