I miss these. Jon, a cross between Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Yates and James Garner's Jim Rockford, is one of my favorite characters, after Sarine. We haven't been seeing enough of him lately.

Isn't Sarine technically a MILF?

"Damn you. Fine."
Goddamit Sarine, you're in this group as a mission specialist. Let the actual Spec Ops boys do their job.

It's good to see that Jon and Ellis can still keep up the lively banter even in their situation. Considering an earthquake could actually bring the mountain down on top of them, the situation must be dire indeed.

Sarine's own credentials at Special Ops trump the heliomancers' by a mere, oh, two thousand years or so, and the Tsuirakuans have figured that out.

Actually, she's a co-commander.

Edit: Ugh, was that really as far back as October?

Eh. To be honest, this is exactly the sort of decision that should be Sarine's call, at least given the lack of cohesive leadership among the refugees -- whether or not to do an extraction is usually a political decision, it's the job of the special ops squad to inform the politicians of the difficulties, and then do the job if the politicians decide they're fine with the extra difficulty.

From a political standpoint, the Tsuirakuans are involved in a humanitarian intervention at the request of the Elven government, and they are using Sarine as the political representative of that government (which is humorous, but political logic often is). As such, until a better representative appears (the refugees seem fairly disorganized), it's actually her job to make this sort of call.

Are we really arguing about whose job it is to make this decision rather than whether the decision itself makes any sense at all?

I am honestly asking, because it does kinda look that way and yet I would rank that as less conversation-worthy than the question of whether "pretty girl" is still pretty when she's frowning.

Which is to say, "pretty girl"s prettiness may still have an impact on the plot...the minutia of exactly what decisions Sarine should or shouldn't be authorized to make was already irrelevant before Jon started hoping they were experiencing an earthquake.

You're the one who brought up the topic. Based on the information available to the characters, I would say that the best choice is not obvious, there are plausible arguments in either direction.
