"Whiny little brat" would have had nothing to do with Ian blowing up and burning down much of Saus, it HAS to be a personality issue. There's evidently something about Ian that just rubbed Jon the wrong way, even though he gave no sign of it on the way back to Saus.

Jon specifically says "after what happened in Saus".
Saus put Ian's previous behaviour and attitude in a different perspective - though it's true, Jon also probably projected a little of his own feeling like he'd failed his sister on Ian for apparently abandoning his sister to find a cure for her illness. But Saus juxtaposed Ian's complaints about the elves, with how he (individually, not all the other half-elves) actually wasn't a whole lot better.
Thus Ian's complaints, while valid, started to become more like whining. Hard to play the victim card when you're killing off people who haven't victimized you - like the innocent bystanders in a town you just burned down. We call it the Sephiroth effect. It has no influence over fangirls.

Also I totally remember Sarine at some point specifically saying that the Elves in this area were known for being secretive and cryptic.
