Port Lorrel- Puppet Masters

Anna-Lisa simply ignored Udo; she had interned for Mesuinu Enterprises long enough to recognize when someone was shoveling it with both hands.

The funny thing was - Udo was telling the truth, exactly as he saw it. He just saw things a little differently from other people. But for a skinny islander waiter who'd mixed it up with Gabriel's heavy infantry and the mutant-things in the abandoned elf temple, not to mention helping save him from the "sea knight," maybe "hero" wasn't much of an exaggeration, at that.

"A catgirl!" she breathed.

"Kobold" chorused Udo and Tamina.

"I think you'll have all sorts of stories for her," he said to Tamina with a bonhomie that he didn't feel. "Maybe you can start with those magical creatures that you like so much-- what did you call them, 'Silka'? You know, sort of a big, magically modified mouse..."

"We didn't even see those," said Udo. "Were they down on the Southern Continent somewhere? We fought big piggy garlops and kobold-looking ferals and Ralkin soldiers with swords and rifles, and conquered them all - who had time to look for mice?"

Tamina said to be polite, but....

"A bipedal primate girl!" I exclaim at the newcomer as if excited. I point at her and squee, just to make sure she knows I'm talking about her.

"Silka? They're cute but don't like them much... taste best with punga fruit. Anyway, nice to meet you, a friend of Khoo's is a friend a' mine." She smiled warmly, thanks to Drusia's recent 'intervention' the expression felt almost natural again. She'd barely stopped herself from bursting into laughter at the elf's comical cry.

....

"Sergeant Jianti?"

"Fuggoff."

"Sir, Captain Haverum requests your presence."

Myra lifted her head from the barroom table and squinted at the men standing in front of her. The nearest, a new recruit, took an involuntary step backwards at the sight of her. Although the woman's face had a harsh, angular prettiness to it, the fresh scar of an arrow-wound on her cheek and the swirls of smeared, black warpaint gave her an appearance of barely-repressed savagery. She spoke to them in a low voice that contained a touch of a rasp.

"Did he say why?"

"Today's the start of Logan's campaign sir. Commander Garald and the Captain ordered all available Black Guard to escort the speakers and caravans around town."

"Fuck me, knife-ears wants me doing political work?"

"Captain Haverum requests your presence, sir." The soldier finished in neutral tones, his face beet-red and sweat beading on his brow.

A minute of further grumbling, followed by the unladylike sound of a bottle being chugged, and Sergeant Jianti was heading to the door. Moriarty and Rigby watched her go.

"...I think I like her." The red-clad Captain said.

"A bipedal primate girl!"

Tamina smiled and Udo leered. "And we bipedal primates know all 'bout sweet monkey love."

"Anyway, nice to meet you, a friend of Khoo's is a friend a' mine."

"Yeah, what she said," Udo added.

Seeing everyone else down by the shore and no violence happening, the Eisenfaust "beachcombers" were picking their way there.

"Hey, hey, hey! What do you think you're doing?"

Angrist turned to stare at the girl briefly before continuing his task. He'd done work at sea before so he was aware that this strange vessel needed to be moored higher or it would wash away at high tide. So while the others were making introductions, he'd grabbed one of the lines and started pulling.

"I'm warning you!"

It was high enough now so Angrist started tying the line in place, still ignoring Anna-Lisa.

"Don't mind Sensei. He's a man of actions and few words...no words, actually"
They kicked me out of the asylum. I miss the jello.

As Khoo had hoped, Anna-Lisa's face got paler and paler as the descriptions of weird, magical critters unfolded. It all went back, he reckoned, to the ... unusual familiar she'd had for her first couple of years at Sashi Mu. "I don't think any of those things were like Honker at all," he said, gauging her reaction to the mention of that name, and feeling a perverse satisfaction that her breathing started to get rapid and shallow. "Well, not much like him, anyway. But yeah, that's the kind of thing we've been dealing with." He chuckled. "Fun, in some ways."

Fortunately, Anna-Lisa wasn't able to kill with a look, either.

"Well, young lady," said the newly-arrived non-Jones Eisenfaust leader, "if you're planning to leave us, would you be open to a proposition to sink some warships on your way away? They belong to the same people your friend here's up against, and they badly need sinking."

Anna-Lisa's eyes got big. "You mean, like we do in 'World of Thaumato-Craft'?"

Not-Jones had been a dab hand at marbles in his own day. That was as close as he'd ever come to understanding this girl's conception of gaming. But he was used to wizards talking weird wizard junk that you could pretty much nod along with 'til they got to the part where the enemy went down.

"I guess it's the same in any world," he said. "You take that great ship you got there, you swim with the sharks. The shnooks' tubs, they sleep with the fishes."

I repress a giggle and face the newcomer.

"Yes, like in 'World of Thaumato-Craft," I confirm in case the sailor's jargon goes over her head. I get the impression that it's a fairly low-hanging goal, but so long as she's shooting at our enemy it doesn't really matter.
