Re: 2020-02-13: Take Me Nowhere
In general I've continued to enjoy the current run of Doctor Who, even when it's obvious they've got a moral to many of the stories, but one episode this season did seem excessively preachy to me, the one where the abandoned wasteland planet turned out to be Earth all along and the Doctor practically (if not literally) faces the camera and say something to the effect of "it's only one possible timeline, it's not too late for you, you can still change this future!"
And honestly I thought Eight was one of the cooler doctors and I really wish they had just used him instead of making up that goddamn War Doctor for the 50th anniversary special.

Okay, you do realise that Doctor Who was always preachy, right? You just don't notice it in the old episodes because the preaching was about issues that were controversial at the time but have now been settled so you don't feel triggered by them.
Seriously... next you're going to be moaning that Star Trek has suddenly developed an anti-capitalist message...

I can only draw so many hairstyles. The would be companion is basically Meji with straight black hair.Graybeard wrote:Know what's frightening?

Yes, but there are different magnitudes here. The show has gone from "The doctor yells at the baddies about why this thing is bad" to literally telling the viewer why the thing is bad, like it's one of those moral of the day bits they'd jam on the ends of cartoons in the 80's and 90's. "Remember kids, the Doctor sez don't pollute or else you'll turn into a genital-less albino mole monster that lives in bombed out Russia".Baeraad wrote:Okay, you do realise that Doctor Who was always preachy, right? And oddly enough, I'm a bit miffed that Star Trek isn't being socialist enough lately. The most recent star trek show is trying to turn federation earth into just another standard generic dreary crapsack future dystopia still filled with all the standard present day isms and socioeconomics problems, like it's Blade Runner with spaceships and transporters.

Yeah that's the same one I found a bit too anvilicious myself.Michael Poe wrote:Yes, but there are different magnitudes here. This bothered me too. Though Trek has never really been clear enough about exactly how their economic system works. They "don't use money any more" but then wtf are "credits"? But yeah, Earth at least was always supposed to be a post-scarcity utopia where they only work for self-improvement and the betterment of all mankind, yet that one character in Picard lost her Starfleet job and now lives in a trailer in the desert as a consequence? And oddly enough, I'm a bit miffed that Star Trek isn't being socialist enough lately.
